Art Pick of the Week: Slim Aarons
Tired of that rustic farmhouse look?
Update your walls with classic vintage photography. These specific prints are currently hanging in our lake house. The treelined shores, sunsets and watercolor canoes you typically see in lake homes really just aren’t my style. Timeless and simple, I chose these because they are nautical , yet timeless and simple. They highlight our natural pine columns without making the room feel overly rustic and outdated. Taken by famous photographer Slim Aarons, they add a modern flare to the room.
Best known for his photographs of "attractive people doing attractive things", Slim Aarons documented the evolution of fashion and pop culture throughout the 50s, 60, and 70s. Born into poverty in 1916, his photography career began during World War II as a military photographer. From there he went on to work with major publications like Vogue, Holiday and Town & Country. This allowed him to make his mark on the world of celebrities, socialites, and jet-setters during some of the most influential decades in American History.
What I love most about Slim Aarons is that his approach was simple. He didn't use make-up artists or artificial lighting, he allowed the beauty of the people and their surroundings to create stunning photos of the people we still admire to this day. In a world where everything is artificial, his approach is impactful. Nobody will remember the name of that Tik Tok influencer, but we remember Clarke Gable, The Kennedy's, and Grace Kelly. Just to name a few.
